Department of Obstetrics Gynaecology

LET NEVER SUN RISE TWICE

BEFORE A WOMAN IN LABOUR


The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was started in the year 1953 with One Civil Surgeon and two Assistants with a bed strength of 52, the Asst. Civil Surgeon was Dr. Kameswari.

In 1960 another unit was sanctioned to improve the under graduate teaching. A galaxy of Professors point in their body and soul into upgrading of the quality of work and teaching names such as Dr. Zakia Askari, Dr. Narayana Rao, Dr. C. Savithri, Dr. K. Saraswathi, Dr. Prasanna, Dr. T. Sarojini, Dr. Suri Sreemathi, Dr. R.J. Srinivasa rao, Dr. C. Anjanappa and Dr. R. Umamaheswara Rao.

In 1972 3rd unit was started and only four years later in 1976 iv unit was created with Urban Family Welfare Centre attached to it.

In 1960 Postgraduate Diploma course was started with 6 students. In 1963 the stalwarts like Dr. Menon and Dr. Bhaskar Rao visited the Department to evaluate the facilities available for Postgraduate teaching.

Dr. Dhanwantara Singh of Patna along with Dr. Krishna Menon and Dr. Bhaskar Rao came for MCI inspection for the approval of the Diploma courses.

Postgraduate Degree Course in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was started in 1966 with 2 candidates.

The Department has acquired laparoscopy for tubal ligation in 1982 and Diagnostic Laparoscopy was given in 1985 the first Cardio Topography machine came into the Department.

Due to relentless effort by Dr. K. Saraswathi and Dr. R.J. Sreenivasan.

By 1976 the department had 4 units with Urban Family Welfare centre attached to the IV unit each unit had a professor and two Assistant Professors.

In 1984 2 more Assistant Professors posts were sanctioned to the department for out patient care.

Each unit had 4 MD and 8 DGO candidates till 2003 when MCI team was kind enough to sanction number of PG admissions per year 14. Dr. C. Anjappa in 1994 could succeed in getting the u/s machine. Dr. R.J. Sreenivasan was the driving force behind the formation of Kurnool Obstetric and Gynaec Society which was affiliated to the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India; which served as a platform for various academic activities. There were many papers and posters presented in various national conferences and few of the papers have won the best paper and post awards. A recent addition of jewel to the crown of the department and also to the institute is Dr. Hari Anupama who was conferred with Doctorate for her work in P.C. OS under the above guidance of Dr. G. Pushpalatha presently Professor and Head of the Department and Dr. Rapoor Seethamma member of ICOC. Professor from the department.

At present the department is serving to the needy beyond the capacity that serves not only to the districts of Rayalaseema but also to Mahaboob Nagar, Nellore and Bellary. Now the delivery rate has seen to 8000 per annum.

Provided the infrastructure for treatment are improved and facilities for research are provided the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology can shown to the world that it is not inferior to none both in patient care and academic field.
