Department of Physiology

The Department of Physiology was started under the able guidance of Dr. C. Venkataramaiah, MBBS, MSc. The founder father of Kurnool Medical College. He was also the then Professor and Head of the department of Physiology. He was sole responsible for producing a lot of sophisticated instruments for the department which are quite useful even as on today. He was succeeded by Dr. P. Simhadri in 1961 who is chiefly a research oriented brainy personality who was trained and groomed by titanic personalities in the field of Physiology in U.S.A. His contemporaries were Dr. B.K. Anand & Brorbeck. He played an instrumental role in commencing lot of research projects which includes the electrical stimulation of Monkey’s brain which was a novel project of his times. He was a forth bearer of the subsequent research workers in the department.

In 1962 Dr. Joseph Gummadi took over the mantle from Dr. Simhadri, Dr. Joseph. G. was recipient or 2 international scholarships for his research work in Physiology and was later awarded with Ph.D.

In 1962-1967 the second spell of Dr. P. Simhadri started during which ICMR projects were taken up and a research assistant was provided by ICMR. Dr. Subba Rao was one of the three research Assistants employed by ICMR authorities and the field of research was estimation of GABA.


The sucessors of Dr. Simhadri were
1. Dr. Tahar Ali, 2. Dr. K. Sita Devi 3. Dr. Sarojini.


All of there were good and eminent teachers and under the guidance of Dr. K. Sita Devi in 1974 M.D. Physiology P.G. courses were started. She was triumphant in grooming P.G. students from this department. 1st P.G. students was Dr. L. Rama Krishna Reddy who is settled in U.S.A.

Among the successive Professors Dr. Sarojini Devi, Dr. Krishna Rao who was popular among the student community for his exceptional teaching abilities in the field of Endocriology.

Dr. Bipasha Khaleel was a good administrator as well as teacher and an highly orthodoing personality who headed this department for a short stint.

Next a towering personality who not only headed the department of Physiology but also head of the institute, KMC was instrumental in enriching the department of physiology both by infrastructural, during his regime P.G. seats were doubled who is none other than Dr. K.S.S. Reddy.

Yet another research oriented Professor from this college and department is Dr. M.Rameswarudu who knows both the in and outs of the department played a Major role in development of equipment and P.G.s grooming he was an extra ordinary personality.
